FAQ: Coaching vs. Counseling

A frequently asked question by clients relates to the difference between coaching and counseling. Both coaching and counseling are collaborative processes, and while these relationships share some approaches and skills, it’s important to understand they are not the same.

The coaching relationship focuses on the present and future and includes a process of identifying goals, exploring ideas, creating plans and implementing those plans.  This short-term, co-created relationship emphasizes the achievement of client goals.  Change is self-developed by the client, and the coach provides encouragement, feedback, and support.  There are no licensing requirements for coaches.

The counseling relationship is based on a medical model that focuses on healing a patient’s illness, reducing dysfunction or recovering from past traumas.  The focus is retrospective and includes an exploration of why behavior occurs.  The counseling relationship is typically long-term and includes a treatment plan outlined by the counselor.  Counseling should only be provided by a licensed provider.
